The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
