Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Career: From Andor to Harry Potter

In a recent interview, renowned actress Fiona Shaw shared insights about her varied professional experiences covering many years and memorable characters.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

When discussing her unforgettable funeral speech in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw disclosed that the initial version included more explicit wording. "I did say a different word in my speech," she clarified, "and the writer wanted the studio would accept it."

The performer detailed the unusual shooting circumstances for that particular scene. "While I delivered that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a huge soundstage, with neither director nor crew members there with me."

Classic Literature Projects

Speaking about the forthcoming screen version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "though performers rarely witness is the final film."

The actress commended director Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and very assured." The production took place in stunning houses throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

The actress also recalled on her earlier performance in the nineties version of Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had particular demands: without hairpieces and only candlelight," she recalled. "He truly aimed to recreate the feeling of early 19th century life."

Wizarding World Reflections

In response to questions regarding her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw spoke fondly about collaborating with the late Richard Griffiths. "Richard was the most elegant, creative and talented man," she shared. "He had the most mellifluous handwriting and once sent me a note inviting me to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as continuously talking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with herself and the young actors on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated by his tales."

Stage Performances

Talking about her Broadway performance in the tragedy Medea, Shaw remembered how emotionally demanding the show was. "I met one of the chorus members three years later, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

This theatrical work continued for years, starting in Dublin, then moving to London, followed by the American capital, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We became very close as a cast," she added.

Approach to Acting

When questioned about her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "humor unites people as it's about rupturing the norm." However, she confessed that "prior to a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to find the rhythm during performance."

Regarding her technique for tackling different characters, Shaw stated: "I find them all challenging. But even if the person you're playing is quite distant from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you recognize."

Current Projects

Discussing her latest role in the production Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a difficult person but you can't play anything from that viewpoint." The actress elaborated that Rose experiences a functional neurological disorder that makes walking difficult.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw observed. "Her only concern is that she desires to get better. She's both benign and blind. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

When told that audiences perceive her perfect for authority figure characters, Shaw answered with humor: "Oh dear! I'm so not scary. But maybe when infused with intention, my features might seem threatening."

The actress continued: "I am in life occasionally rather disorganized so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play very intelligent, organized characters. I try to portray interesting people so I avoid criticizing them. Please don't fear – approach and greet me!"

Love for Language

Discussing her celebrated interpretation of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw expressed her deep connection with language and poetry. "I'm consistently devoted in the language," she declared, "since the indicators to everything are contained within the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "verse constitutes the polished form of language, or the moment that has been captured." As individuals boil down to what they genuinely wish to express, it's frequently lyrical."

Voice Recording

Concerning her acclaimed audiobook performances, specifically the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I loved reading Alice in Wonderland because I included everybody I knew into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

She described how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen as reminiscent of Geraldine McEwan. "It always seems a privilege to record and perform literature," she concluded, "though it requires extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Recalling her experience working with renowned director Terrence Malick on Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as unconventional. "Everything Terrence Malick says and does is unique," she observed.

She shared a specific recollection of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my voicemail which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most exotic choice in the world."

Shaw also mentioned Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by different directors. "He exclusively used natural light," she continued, "meaning actors could perform inside by a window or outside on the street."

Regarding the extensive editing process, Shaw revealed that "He takes approximately three years to edit the film. I had been told by the producer after two years that I was probably one of the primary roles, but by the time the film came out, I was mostly removed."

She concluded by characterizing Malick's distinctive approach: "He builds this massive framework, and he removes most elements. He essentially deconstructs films."
