EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
