Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with injury setbacks following confirming that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for several more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The Germany international has been absent since the summer due to knee surgery. Initially expected to come back sooner, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when advancing his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This update leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

More doubts involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the backline for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on new players in the last transfer window has placed the club in a more robust situation to handle such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if a larger pool of players was helping their league challenge, his response was positive. “Absolutely, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the problems with the defence,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the case of Mikel Merino.”

Addressing the delay noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave further detail. “He was doing everything. He could not go to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

Arteta expressed his personal desire to see him return. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his nature. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”

“His playing record is phenomenal, he’s been always available, and I look forward to get him back involved playing because I believe it’s going to be a huge lift.”
